The Borno State
Governor, Kashim Shettima has released the sum of sixteen million, and eight
hundred thousand naira to next of kins of the slain officers,they were killed
in the line of duty . Scores of policemen and hundreds of civilians were slain
in the attack in Gomboru Ngala Local Government area of Borno State by the
Islamic militants
Distributing the money to beneficiaries at the Police
Headquarters in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Thursday, the Police
Commissioner, Lawal Tanko said the Borno State government had graciously made
available N16.8 million to the next of kin of 16 slain officers and four
injured.
The Commissioner said each of the next of kin is to receive
one million naira while the injured officers are to receive the sum of two hundred
thousand naira each.
Speaking on behalf of the families of the slain officers,
Abdullahi Dogara, a relation of one of the officers from Nasaraws State and
Kuve Mathew whose husband was killed in the Gomburu attack pleaded with the
police authorities to allow the salaries of their fallen comrades to flow for
at least six months to enable the families they left behind stabilize.
They said this would help the children they left behind
continue with their education and have food on the table, as most of the wives
of the slain officers are not working.
Kuve Mathew also said that the authorities should look into
the issue of equipping the police with superior weapons in operation to enable
them defend Nigerians and themselves.
“The painful thing is that your husband left home with the
hope that he will come back but at the end of the day ,what is coming back is
the corpse of your husband; they have always complained of inadequate
ammunition given to them to fight the insurgents”, she said.
T he Commissioner of Police however said it was not in their
hands to determine the flow of salaries of slain officers, but that the police
authority would continue to do everything possible to ensure that the families
of their fallen colleagues did not suffer much before their entitlements are
ready.
