As efforts to contain the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus
Disease continues across the country, the Lagos State Government has dedicated
the August sanitation exercise to the prevention of the Ebola Virus Disease.
The Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, said the
state government would continue to be in the forefront of the campaign for a
healthier and sustainable environment.
He said, “Over the years, the present administration in the
state has continued to educate Lagosians to desist from unhygienic acts like
open urination and open defecation. We have also urged our citizens to clean
the environment and adopt proper waste management habit.
“As a preventive measure to curb the spread of the
disease, Lagosians must come out in large numbers and actively participate in
the Saturday exercise. Efforts should be concentrated on the cleaning of
drains, canals and fumigation of our environment to completely eliminate the
disease in the state.”
The commissioner advised residents to sustain the solid
waste management programme of the government through the patronage of approved
operators for the disposal of their solid waste and wastewater management
challenges.
He noted that when wastewater was not properly discharged,
it could lead to spread of communicable diseases.
Bello warned commercial transport operators and car owners
to comply with the restriction order between 7am and 10am, saying any vehicle
caught violating the order would be dealt with according to the state laws.culled
