The Ice Bucket Challenge is the latest viral craze to sweep
the internet.
The challenge involves you sitting down, then you get someone to pour a bucket of
freezing cold water over you and then nominate a friend to take on the next
challenge by sharing it over social media.
The fad started in America to raise money for the
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease and Motor Neurone
Disease, attacks the spinal cord and can lead to speech difficulties, muscle
spasms and even paralysis.
It affects an estimated 30,000 people in the US and 5,000 in
the UK.
The bright idea came from former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, whose career was cut short by ALS after he was widely tipped to be a Boston Red Sox star.
His first challenge was accepted by fellow Boston athletes
and some Red Sox players, and since then names such as Justin Timberlake, Mark
Zuckerberg and Darren Fletcher of Manchester United have all taken part in the charitable
drenching.
Recently, former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates took on the challenge in his own unique way.
Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO at Facebook, nominated Bill
Gates, co-founder, former chief executive and chairman of Microsoft, for the
challenge, he gave him 24 hours.
"I'm always up for a challenge," Mr Gates wrote
underneath a video clip on his Facebook page that showed the world how one tech
genius goes about things when challenged by another tech genius.
The man who created Microsoft wasn't going to simply dump a
bucket of freezing water on his head, oh no. The 58-year-old seated himself at
a work desk in a garden, and decided to do it "better". He sketched a
design for the perfect drenching machine and even built a working mini model
out of wood and paper. "It's going to be great," he declared after he
approved it.
He then donned a welder's mask to put finishing touches to
the real set-up. Before drenching himself in ice cold water, he extended the
challenge to three other celebrities - Elon Musk of Tesla, Chris Anderson of
TED, and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest. Will they be able to outdo Mr Gates?
They will have to try very hard.
Oprah Winfrey is not left out as she has since undrtaken her own ice water challenge, she was challenged by Tyler Perry. See her tweet below:
